Unit 32: Designing TV Idents

Monday 21st November

Today we have started a new unit. In this unit I shall be designing a TV Ident.

Unit 59: Web Authoring

Friday 9th December:

Today I have started a new unit. The brief has been given to us and I must write an 800 word investigation report that documents the different terminology and technical information associated with web authoring. Today I went into the library and found some books about it and taking a lot of notes. I have felt that I have achieved something today because I have found some useful information about html from books and not on the internet.

Monday 12th December:

Today I have been finding even more useful research on the internet about HTML, DHTML, Javascript and FTP.

Friday 6th January

Today I learned a lot of skills and started to learn how to use it. I felt that it was much easier than I originally anticipated that it was going to be and I do feel very confident with this.

reflect how well I've achieved, what can I do to improve, what am I confident with, weaknesses, how I feel about it, etc.

Friday 13th January:

Today the task was about learning how to use Dreamweaver again and learning how to make tables - showing how convenient they are and why we have them. I am still feeling very confident with using this software and I feel that I can write about this and express the information properly in my skills journal. I am writing my skills journal in a format where if one was to read this, they could learn how to use Adobe Dreamweaver and the basics of web design.

Unit 1: Pre-Prodction Techniques

Monday 21st November:

Today we have started a new unit. This unit - as you can tell by the unit title - is about the techniques of Pre-production. In this unit I shall learn about understanding the requirements for a specific media production, be able to prepare Pre-production documentation for a specific media production, and be able to apply Pre-production planning for a specific media audience.

In this unit we are going to be looking back at previous work we have done in the past year and see what we did for the Pre-production stage in that unit.

Callum's Work - Unit 6: Critical Approaches to Media

Monday September 12th:

Today has been our first lesson with Callum. We were being told all about what we are going to learn about with Callum and what we will be covering in these lessons. This 2 hour lesson is the only lesson of the week where we have Callum. I took notes about what we will learn and the learning outcome is to understand how media producers define audience for product, understand how media producers create products for certain audiences.

Questions were brought up in the lesson to discuss such as "What is audience classification?" and "Which creative media producers may use this process?". The answer we all discussed in class was almost all kinds of media producers like film makers, TV shows (whether it's day time TV or prime time TV), magazines, websites such as google or clothes companies.

Another question was "What are the categories a media producer might use?" as in what kind of people like age (kids, teenagers, college students, adults, people over 65/retired), gender, sexual orientation (gay, straight or bi) and socio-economic groups.

The next we all discussed was "Why creative media producers may classify and categorise audiences?" this answer was simple; Because media producers will need to know WHO does or WILL like their product so it can be a success to sell. They don't want it to be a failed product and waste money. And because of other obvious reasons like consumer breakdown and to determine WHO is the audience.

The final question was "What different research methods may be used to classify audiences for creative media products?" which were things like questionairres, ask in the street, primary, secondary, quantative & qualitative research, focus groups, sample viewings etc.

Monday September 19th:

Today in Callum's lesson, we've been "defining audiences". The aims of today were to discuss different types of audience research and to analyse companies that conduct audience research. I learnt a lot today and had a recap on last weeks lesson and went into further detail on some stuff we did last week. Such as "Why is it important for media producers to define audiences?"

What I've learned from this question is that so they know who to aim their product at like age, gender, occupation, socio-economic groups, sexual orientation. Other reasons like they don't want to waste money on a failed product, so they can DETERMINE WHO is the AUDIENCE. Also things like so they can make changes or improvements for certain areas of their products. And consumer breakdown -who's buying, change their marketing strategies, they need to know who the audience is and their likes/dislikes. They want their product to be successful and profitable, therefore they must ensure that they are targeting their product to the right audience and that they will respond in the desired way.

Other questions we answered: What methods do media producers use to help define audiences? The answer was primary, secondary, quantative & qualitative research. And a market research website I first heard about today which is called ipsos.com. We also went into further detail on the definitions of "Quantitative research" and "Qualitative Research".

Quantitative research is research based on measurable facts and information that can be counted, producing numerical data.

Qualitative research is research based on opinions, attitudes and preferences rather than facts and figures e.g. Focus groups, interviews, questionairres, open questions, market research.

Then we learnt about RAJAR and BARB and spent the remainder of the lesson doing the tasks given which involve writing about BARB and RAJAR and then had to do a questionnaire.

Monday September 26th:

Today I have been learning about the codes and conventions of sitcoms. I also learnt about the differences between a traditional and a non-traditional sitcom. I learnt about codes and conventions of sitcoms like limited characters, limited sets, catchy theme tune (that often introduces all of the characters), canned laughter, catchphrases, linear narrative that uses equilibrium, disruption and then returns to equilibrium, and the use of small social groups like family, friends and work. Now our task is to watch a traditional and a non-traditional sitcom and write about them, giving reviews on both of them and how the codes and conventions are similar or different. I will be looking at The IT Crowd - a traditional sitcom and The Inbetweeners - a non-traditional sitcom. Callum has noted that we can only do British sitcoms and that if we are going to write about Inbetweeners then we cannot mention anything about The Inbetweeners Movie because we are supposed to be looking at TV sitcoms and the movie is falling out of the category.

Monday October 10th:

Today I have been looking at "The Effects of Media" and have been discussing in class and the effect of exposure to explicit content. We discussed theories that relate to the effects of explicit content on audiences and had debates about censorship. We looked up news stories that had been blamed on the media such as the 1999 Columbine High School Massacre which was blamed on violent video games and Marilyn Manson. There were many more stories that we looked at such as the 1976 film "Taxi Driver" starring Robert De Niro and Jodie Foster as a 13 year old prostitute which made a fan called John Hinckley Jr attempt to assassinate the then-president of the United States, Ronald Reagen. Also looked at "A Clockwork Orange" made by Stanley Kubrick. This film made people commit murders in the same way as they do in the plot to the film and even wearing the same costumes as the characters in the film, Kubrick did not allow this film to be released in the UK and was banned in the UK until 2000 when it was unbanned the year after he died. This then made us look at other films that have been banned and censorship.

Monday October 17th:

Today in Callum's lesson, we have gotten feedback on the work we submitted 2 weeks ago. None of it has been graded, there's just a "status" on what has and hasn't been submitted. It will say either "submitted", "not submitted" or "submitted, missing folder". Callum showed us what we missed out and gave us improvement plans for what to do when we resubmit this. We have 2 weeks today to resubmit this.

For the rest of the lesson, we looked at "Developing Responses to Media texts". We looked at "What textual analysis is. Textual analysis is when you deconstruct and critically analyse key elements of a media text.

Analysing the meaning of a test
Analysing Media texts
Analysing for a text can be persuasive
Critical

I learnt today that genre's and generic conventions are important for audiences because audiences gain pleasure from codes and conventions by having their expectations of media products fulfilled and by being able to predict what will happen.

We then looked at reality TV show's and learned about the types of codes and conventions they have, such as:

Stereotypes - Bimbo's in Towie and The Only Way Is Essex
People from different backgrounds
Single community - real locations
Obstacles
Real life situations
Eddentric - people who act up - every day people
Drama

Monday October 31st:

Today we were learning about "Representations in the media" and the definition of "Representation". It is:
The way media producers portray characters in fictional works
Artificial versions of the reality we percieve around is
It is important to note that in the media representations are composed and constructed
Representations are mediated
Representations are composed of signs and symbols that are easily understood by audiences
Representations help audiences make sense of the media they are consuming
With media representations, audiences perceptions of the world around us would be very limited. Media representations mediate our view of the world by providing audiences with information.

Who: Audience
Why: To create ideological purpose in a way that furthers producers arguments

In the remainder of the lesson, we learned about "stereotyping". Today I learnt that the main cause of stereotypes is because of the media like movies, TV shows, the news etc. Today I was learning about how stereotypes worked, they're widely circulated ideas and assumptions about a particular group of people. They involve categorising groups based on qualities such as age, gender, code of dress etc. and evaluating the group being stereotyped. They emphasise easily grasped ideas and features of certain cultures/social groups.

My homework is to identify representations and stereotypes being used in whatever reality TV show we looked at for last weeks homework. I looked at "Young, Dumb & Living Off Mum" and before we were set this homework, I noticed a few stereotypes such as a girl from Stockport who talks like a chav, it could give people the impression everyone from Stockport talks like that. And there was a gay character who was an even more perfect stereotype which I will write about in my homework where I will need to deconstruct and analyse how certain people are represented.

Monday November 7th:

Today I have

Monday November 14th:

Today is the final submission day for all of our work and the homework we were given a month ago to write an 800 word article about something that has been blamed on the media. I wrote my article about A Clockwork Orange which influenced people into murder the same way it was shown in the plot. And the other task (task 4) was to fill out a textual analysis table on a reality tv show and write an essay about the codes and conventions of it including stereotypes shown and how they are represented. I spent the lesson getting all this finally completed and ready for submission by the end of the lesson.

Simon's work - Unit 34: 2D Animation

Monday September 12th:

Today I have had a lesson with Simon and about how we are going to use Adobe Flash. We will soon learn some techniques and that some will be harder than others. I was also told we had to be able to handle the basic techniques in Flash. In a few weeks I will be producing a 2D animation with a soundtrack. What I will learn is to understand and develop the techniques of 2D animation. I will be able to devise a 2D animation with a soundtrack, generate ideas, understand audience, planning, mind maps, storyboards and sketches. Be able to evaluate audience and response to feedback.

As this is my first day back to college, we have yet to officially enrol on to the course. We will be enrolling later this week. And as we need to start doing research on the history of animation right now but we do not have our computer login’s, so we have all gone to spend the majority of the lesson in the library to do research on the history of animation in there and take notes etc.

I think that it is good that we are doing this because these days, we rely too much on the internet and when we finish our essays with a bibliography at the end, they will all be internet links. And I have found some very useful information in the library from a book called “Introduction to Film Studies: Fourth Edition” by Bill Nichols and Jill Nelmes. ISBN 978-0-415-40928-5.

Friday September 16th:

This day of the week is when we have a 1 hour lesson with Simon. As we don't enrol until later this afternoon during Harry's lesson, we spent the majority of the lesson in the library again. I found even more useful information which I wrote down in my notepad from the book I was looking at on Monday, “Introduction to Film Studies: Fourth Edition”. Then I found another useful book called "Film Art: An Introduction-Eighth Edition" by David Bordwell and Kirstin Thompson. However, there was no more time and we had to return to class so I made a note in my notepad of the name of the book and I decided that after I enrol this afternoon, I will take the book out of the library for the weekend (as I have not enrolled yet, I cannot take books out of the library either.
Monday September 19th:

Today had been the first lesson with Simon where we can now use the computers now we have our logins. So with all the notes that I have been writing in my notepad, I can now type it in on Microsoft Word. The task is to write about the history of animation in chronological order. While I typed it all up, I expanded on my notes by finding out additional information on the internet and pictures of animation and inventions such as the praxinoscope, the zoetrope and the phenakistoscope. This is my bibliography so far:

The Cinema Book Third Edition by Pam Cook ISBN 978-1-84457-193-2
Introduction to Film Studies 4th Edition by Bill Nichols and Jill Nelmes
ISBN 978-0-415-40928-5
Monda

Friday September 23rd:

Today we have been told about doing a skills journal and have taken notes about Adobe Flash, the program we will be using to make our 60 second animations. Notes such as FPS which stands for Frames Per Second and we were recommended to do 25 frames per second, crossheads for the animation, F6 = end frame/new key frame, the enter button on the keyboard is a quicker way to press play. Also learnt about colour codes like Black being FFFFFF and White being 000000. Also noted about the library which like Photoshop is the files/images that are stored, we were also shown how to drag and duplicate objects.

Friday September 30th:

Today we had a tutorial on Adobe Flash on how to make a ball move from one side of the screen to the other. It reminded me of last year when I had a tutorial in Adobe Photoshop on how to make animation on that.

Friday October 7th:

Today was another lesson witth a tutorial on Adobe Flash. This lesson we learnt about importing audio and video into Flash and that for audio, only mp3 and wma files work and for video, only avi and mov files work. These are skills that I am certainly going to use when I make my 60 second animation because of what idea I have wrote about in my justification document and done on my storyboard.

Monday October 10th:

Today I have started on making my production schedule for the 2D animation project. Then I went to improve/expand on my skills audit.

Friday October 14th:

Today I have been looking at animation videos on YouTube for the task where I need to look at three animation analysis aimed at my audience. I will look at The Simpsons, Simon's cat and Futurama.

Monday October 17th:

Today at the start of the lesson I got feedback for the work I submitted a few weeks ago on the history of animation and the planning/pre-production for making my 60 second animation. . My action points in my improvement plan is to expand and improve a lot more on my mind map and Simon suggested that I could make it on the computer with Photoshop or Powerpoint or Word etc. and possibly do it in A3. My other action point is to reformat the bibliography section in my essay about the history of animation. I got a hand out about how to do it and before this I never realised that I had to write bibliography links and referrences in that way. I just simply copied and pasted the link to the website or (for books) write down the name of the book, the author and the ISBN number. So that's something new and important I have learnt today; how to refference in a bibliography. Simon also suggested that I write in the "I need help with...." section of the improvement plan "Lighting effect in Adobe Flash" for the idea I am doing.

I have been continuing to look at animation that is aimed at my audience, I am now writing about the "Simon's cat" short animated series on YouTube, The Simpsons and the "THINK Road Safety" adverts with the singing hedgehogs. I asked Simon for suggestions and he mentioned the "Charlie says..." adverts which were around in the 70's and are the equivalent to the Hedgehog Road safety adverts. Instead of doing "Charlie says" I found the hedgehog road safety adverts and I'm going to write about them. I am not going to write about Futurama now. Just The Simpsons, Simon's Cat and the Hedgehog Stop think go adverts.

My homework that I am setting myself over half term is to complete this and do a detailed storyboard for my idea. That way, when I come back to college (Monday October 31st) I can start straight away in Adobe Flash on my animation as the deadline is Monday December 5th and I want to get it done by Monday November 28th so I can use the last week of this project (monday November 28th - Monday December 5th) to do sample viewings and my evaluation.

Monday October 31st:

Today I got feedback for how I should do my detailed storyboard and what is missing with my skills audit. For my skills audit, I need to add some more screenshots and a lot more detail, and when I write the detail I must write it to explain how everything works, as in if someone was to have a copy of my skills audit, they could follow the steps easily in doing things. Being told that, I know exactly how I will now word this as I write about it. I have been told that for my storyboard I need to
1. decide how to split the storyboard up
2. Drawing - either drawn hard copy or in Adobe Photoshop
3. Add colour - and/or annotate
4. FPS, flash transitions, masking and techniques
and 5. Identify how many particular key frames in the sequences - light switch sound effect.

Missing skills:

Rolling ball
Motion guides
Easing
How to group layers to folders
Timeline effects
Importing images
Masking

I spent the lesson doing my detailed storyboard, the teacher suggested the idea of making my storyboard using Adobe Photoshop or some other program to make it but I thought I'd be better off doing it hand drawn. I printed out a storyboard template but then I just thought to myself that I might as well do it in Adobe Photoshop because I am terrible at drawing so I feel that if I did do the detailed one hand drawn, It would just be a copy of the original storyboard. It'll also be much easier to edit and manipulate/change the size of the text and colours and content etc. My plan is to now get these done and printed, then I will add some annotation wherever it is needed so it is easy to follow and I am going to write the text below the images on the paper when it is printed and the duration of that shot.

Monday November 7th:

Today I brought in my detailed storyboard that I have been doing for the past week. I finished doing it on Adobe Photoshop. printed it out and I am now annotating it and writing detail on what is going on in the storyboard like the transitions, the colours, the images, the duration of each shot etc. I have started making the first shot in Adobe Flash.

Friday November 11th:

Today I made a beginning title sequence saying "A history of Animation by Danny Barry". It was suggested by the teacher that I make one. So I did. I also learnt a new skill I should put in my skills journal - that you need to use the "static text" option if you want your text to have a transparent background - which is now gonna be more than useful for half of this animation. After this I started to make the first slide. My background is now red curtains with three lights shining on the screen in the middle of the curtains like a theatre.

Monday November 14th:

Today I had finished with the first slide and had both the text and the image of the phenakistiscope turned into a transition of it entering. I made sure the duration was long enough and to make the effect of the lights switching off and back on - showing a new slide - I Copied the layer of the curtains in the theatre with the three lights at the bottom, I photoshopped it by removing the lights & making the screen black. Now I have added this layer into Flash, I will have this up for 10 FPS and then cut back to the next slide about the zoetrope. Now I need to add the sound effect of a light switch turning off & on but I will add the audio at the end.

Friday November 18th:

Today I have got up to 20 seconds into my animation so far. I am now 1 3rd into finishing it.

Monday November 21st:

Today I have been doing my aniumation and have got to 30 seconds of the animation and I am now half way there from finishing my animation.

Friday November 25th:

Today I have got up to 45 seconds of my animation - my target is to get this finished by the end of Monday and have the audio added.

Monday November 28th:

By the end of today's lesson I had finally got the animation up to 60 seconds long precisely. However I have not yet added the audio and I might rearrange the duration of some parts - make some bits longer and some bits shorter.

Friday December 2nd:

Today I have now officially finished with making my animation and I have added the sound to the video. The audio that I have used is the song "Rods and Cones" by Blue Man Group - the instrumental version of the song - and the sound effect of the light switch. I had to make seperate layers for the sound effect of the light switch and the music as it was complicated to have them on the same layer. Now that it is officially finished, I will save it as an mov file and upload it to YouTube. I will need to create an account to upload it and send it to my teacher. I also found a website called surveymonkey.com
where I shall make my questionnaire. I have been told by the teacher that the minimum number of people I can ask the questionnaire to are 6 people. These people must be my target audience - ages 14 - 16. I know enough people who are that age, they are mainly from my school and half of them are my friends brothers/sisters who I can ask the questions to. I will ask them over Facebook. Also as the deadline is getting closer and I need to write my sample viewing feedback and evaluation, I will have to start pestering these 14-16 year olds into viewing my animation and filling out the questionnaire as soon as possible. I can get the evaluation done on Monday. The deadline is 5pm.

DVD Menu Assignment

Week 1 Tuesday September 7th

Today is the second day of college and this course. We have been told to create an account on blogger.com which I am currently writing on. We had also been instructed by Harry to send links to our bloggers by emailing him them. Which I have just done. Today we looked at a few film posters and annotated them pointing out things like the logo, the title being in the centre of the poster, if it says “In 3D”, the date, a website, previous credits from the makers’ other films such as “From the producers of THE RING and THE GRUDGE”, the slogans, actor credits, other credits at the bottom and quotes from film critics like “Katie Holmes does the finest acting of her career – The New York Post”.

Week 1 Wednesday September 8th

Today we have just started to develop ideas for a movie that we are going to make a film poster for. This will only be an exercise but we are going to be making DVD menu’s and to make a DVD menu, we must first come up with a film idea and make a poster for that so we have a very good idea to know how our DVD menu’s will be like. I thought of three film ideas, The Immortal Girl, The App of Time and The Invisible Pervert.

Week 2 Tuesday September 14th

Today in the first 2 hour lesson, I was in E22, the lecture theatre. My class were watching on the big TV screen DVD menu’s. Andy put on loads of DVD menus and we had to take notes on the codes, conventions and elements in them such as the buttons, the rollover effects, the animations and if it’s on auto-play or on a loop. In the afternoon, we went into the computer rooms and had to do a task sheet where we looked at four different random DVD menu’s. We had to write the film name, the genre, the element(s), and what the element does and how it interacts with other elements. I wrote about The Breakfast Club, The Hurt Locker, Frost/Nixon and Fast Food Company.

Week 2 Wednesday September 15th

Today I have used Adobe Photoshop. I have used it before because last year, I did a media course  at this college that was First Diploma in Media which involved using Photoshop, I have since then known exactly how to use all the features on it but today I am learning a bit more on it unlike last year where I did not learn as much. Also today, Andy showed us a lot of convenient websites for us to use and told us to favourite them in internet explorer.
Week 2 Friday September 17th

Today we looked at what are the most used/most viewed/most popular websites. Before we looked at them, we were put in pairs of three and discussed what could be the most popular ones. Then we got shown what are the most popular ones.

Week 3 Wednesday September 22nd

Today, I did the film poster analysis on the computer so all I have got left to do now is to finish creating my moodboard which I will take home to finish. It will also be easier to do it at home because I have glue and lots of newspapers/magazines to use for my moodboard. I will have it completed by Friday for when I see Simon. And I also got a bit more experience with Photoshop.
Week 3 Friday September 24th
Today, I brought in the homework that I finished yesterday where I had to finish making my moodboard so I could scan it on the College scanners today and upload it into Adobe Photoshop CS3. In Adobe Photoshop CS3, I had to annotate the moodboard to say the reasons as to why I put those images/text in there. I put them in because my idea was about a person who love music and magazines and finds out how to become invisible and uses his powers to steal things and scare people. I preffered doing my moodboard at home because here at college, there was not that much glue or magazines to go around but at home I had some magazines I could use and I also had glue at home. The one on the left is what is looked like first, the one on the right has the annotation I added.
Week 4 Wednesday September 29th
So far in the first hour in this class with Harry, we have been tested about the things we have learned in the last few weeks, we needed to write down 3 things that we need to write down in our blogs every week, 3 things that we have learned from the Adobe Photoshop tutorials we've done since last week, and 3 things that we needed to consider thinking about for our own film posters which would be about the iconography, colour & composition and the set up of the canvas. He timed us to write down/answer these questions for 15 minutes, I did ask for help with the iconography and what it means and colour and composition but it was still good to ask so I could have a clear understanding of these tasks.

For the rest of this lesson, I had to get started on making my poster for my movie idea. I got my images from Google images but there are some which I will need that I could not find on the internet so for my homework that I'm setting myself, I will do some original photography at home where I will take a picture of my iPod with headphones plugged into them. I will place the headphones in a certain place and take the picture from a certain angle, when I take the picture, I will edit it in Adobe Photoshop CS3. The main thing I will need to do when I edit it is to take out the background. So far I am half way finished making my film poster. I am also coming into College tomorrow even though I have no media lessons because I'm retaking my GCSE English and I need to come in from 1:15 - 3:45, I will stay after 3:45 in open access where I can use Adobe Photoshop CS3 to do my film poster. I may even come in earlier instead to get more done.
Week 4 Friday October 1st

Today, I finished making my film poster for Harry and Simon, the film poster is "The Invisible Pervert". I came into College yesterday because I do English and after English was over, I went into Open Access to do some more work then. I stayed until 6pm because that was when my friend finished class. So I stayed in open access to do work for over 2 hours. I did some original photography for the picture of the iPod I took. I actually took a picture of it laying on the floor and I placed the headphones in a place where someone would hear it. I took the picture and when I got it in Adobe Photoshop CS3, I took out the background to make it look as if it's floating in the air being held by the invisible person (or should I say, The Invisible Pervert). Today, I completely finished the poster and now I have moved onto the part where I need to do research into the final product.
Week 5 Wednesday October 6th
Today, I spent the first two hours making my moodboard and printing it out, that is now complete. My moodboard was relevant to the type of genre for my film poster, a type of Comedy/Drama/Thriller. I now learned how to use Adobe Encore and mess around with it. Adobe Encore looks easier than I thought it was going to be and I have got an idea on what I am going to do for my DVD Menu, I just need to do my planning & sketches for my menu.
Week 6 Wednesday October 12th
Today, I continued to use Adobe Encore. I learned more about how to use the software and Harry was giving us some tutorials on how to do certain things, we got shown how to make the homepage of a DVD menu by using Adobe Photoshop CS3. We also had to get our note taking material out and list down all the things that should be in our red production folders right now. I also continued to do my "Research into final product" and I finished the planning bit where I had to do 6 sketches for my DVD menu. When we were making homepages for DVD menu’s, it was just a test and could be as basic as possible. I just got a random Simpsons picture of Nelson Muntz and made “play” text with some random font. When we label layers, we had to put a “(=1)” at the beginning of the name of the label so that Adobe Encore will read it as a button editable in Adobe Encore. I managed to link it to another page and link it back to the home page.
Week 6 Friday October 15th

Today I have been continuing doing the planning, sketches and my PowerPoint presentation for my DVD menu. I scanned my sketches on to the computer by using a scanner and changed the settings to make it viewable and then I got it into Microsoft PowerPoint, I can now talk about the sketches I drew in my PowerPoint when I present to the class my idea for my DVD menu. I’m mentioning in my presentation how these will not be 100% accurate to the final product.
Week 7 Wednesday October 20th
Today, I started to do my proposal, I have currently not finished it yet but I am going to do it for homework. Today was the last day and this Friday is an inset day so we do not need to come in for that day and we also have half term next week so we do not return to college until Tuesday November 2nd. This will mean I have almost 2 weeks off and I can use that time to catch up on any outstanding work I have yet to complete. After going to break, we all got a tutorial by Harry to show us how to make animations on Adobe Photoshop CS3. I managed to make a fish and a snail race each other and just had this on a loop. I originally put just an apple and then I saved it, then an apple racing a snail but never saved that but then I made a snail racing a fish. I changed it from an apple to a fish because it made more sense. It was strongly amusing to me and my peer. The videos are available to view on my blog.
These are screenshots of my animations I made in Adobe Photoshop CS3.

Week 8 Tuesday November 2nd
Today I uploaded my photos on to my computer and added them into Photoshop to use in my DVD menu. During my week off at half term I took some original photography with my camera. I uploaded them today and I have now added some text for buttons like "play", "scenes", "set up" and "extras". I also finished my proposal during half term and what I need to do now is to make these into buttons for when I add them into Adobe Encore. So far, I think that all of my work in my red folder for Simon & Harry is up to date.
Week 8 Friday November 5th
Today, I continued adding images into Adobe Photoshop CS3 and added text for the buttons that I would use in my DVD menu, for the main menu I have now added some animation of an iPod floating in the background from the left side of the screen to the right side of the screen. The image of the iPod I used was the same iPod I used in my film poster of The Invisible Pervert. I was actually the one who took that picture of that iPod and edited it out in Photoshop and I have mentioned this a few weeks ago in a previous blog post, I did not take any images from Google Images like I did for all the other images that I used in my film poster because that was an exercise. Because I took the photo of my iPod, that is original photography that I can still use in my DVD menu. My DVD menu is only allowed original photography and no images on the internet. I have not yet finished doing all of this and I will be doing it as homework to be done before next Tuesday. The font that I have used for all the text in this is Kristen ITC. The Image that I took was an image that I took during my week off at the park as I have explained before that in this imaginary film that I have created, The Invisible Pervert goes to the park with his iPod while invisible.

Week 9 Friday November 12th
This week, we have been creating our DVD menu pages in Adobe Photoshop CS3 and have then added them to Adobe Encore to link together. I found this enjoyable but there were a lot of problems. I found it hard to follow the process of adding the codec’s but I asked for help and read the booklet numerous times and eventually got it, I added buttons and I got them working in Encore by linking them to other pages but the rollover effects didn't work. I tried everything but it was still not working, I asked for help but even Simon couldn't figure it out. Eventually, we realised that it was because of the blending options. So I removed the blending options and it worked but it wasn't the colour I wanted it. After doing a few more adjustments, it stopped working again and I don't know why. For now I'm going to work on the rest of the menu and save the rollover effects until last.
Week 10 Wednesday November 17th
Today I did some more work on my DVD menu and focused on the animation. I have almost figured out how to do it and I am learning more how to use it. Because of this I will need to ask for more help on exporting the animations I make in Photoshop into Encore.
Week 10 Friday November 19th
Today I came into College an hour late because I had to go to the doctors. When I arrived, Andy told me the work I needed to do, he also noted that "I had not been keeping up to date at all with my blog", I knew this was untrue because I know I have been writing on my blog every week. However, when Andy went to my blog, nothing appeared. I realised all this time I have been writing on this blog but nothing has appeared because I made the blog wrong and gave a wrong blog address because I made a brand new blog for every day. So all the stuff I did write, I copy & pasted it into a new blog post with a new link. I have now sent an email to Harry and Andy asking them to delete the current link to the blogger under my name and replace it with this new blog link.
Later on today, I had my feedback from Simon for what I need to do or improve. Simon showed me my production diary and made me look through my red folder which had all my work and tick off everything I have done. The things I have not done were what I had to write down in my action plan. These were to write about "Initial aims - final idea (detailed)" which was where I was supposed to write last September about my final idea for a movie idea/film poster idea. I won't have a problem writing that because I know exactly what I am going to say in it. I will say a summary about The Invisible Pervert. I was also told by Simon that I need to update my contingency plan document because since I write that and printed it out, I have faced a few problems since that I didn't think of or wrote in my contingency plan document. I also got told to expand more on my blog (Simon saw this entire blog after I sorted out the problem and rewrote it) by adding more detailed information and screenshots or just images of my work such as my film poster and screenshots of my DVD menu so far. I also finished my animation for my DVD menu.
The last thing I was told to do that wasn't in my folder and have not done at all was a moodboard for my DVD menu where I make a moodboard based around DVD menu's. I am going to write up my initial aims - final idea, update my contingency plan and re print it, expand a bit on my blog and find images to use from Google images or from screenshots of some of my DVDs for homework to be done by Tuesday. I will make the moodboard in class next Tuesday once I get some images to use over the weekend. I also don't have Photoshop at home.

Week 11 Wednesday November 24th
Today in Harry's class we have been learning a few things about keeping on track and up to date. He has said to us about how we need to find help for ourselves instead of ask him, for example, if we were stuck on adding animation from Photoshop into Encore, we should go to Google and look it up, watch video tutorials about it online, read Photoshop/encore guide books, take notes in class etc. I found a website to help me with my rollover effects which is http://digitalproducer.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=25879 Harry has said about if we ask him or one of our classmates for help on doing things like these, that is a form of plagiarism because it is them doing the work not me. It is like saying you can't write something so you get someone who can to write everything for you.

I think that at this point, I will not be able to finish everything in this unit by next Friday, December 3rd. So this is why I am going to come into college on my days off and do work then. I am already coming into college tomorrow anyway because I do GCSE English from 1:15 - 3:30. I may come in either a few hours before 1:15 or stay behind after 3:30 in Open Access to do work.
Week 13 Wednesday December 8th
Today, I took notes about what is going to happen next week. Next week is review week. It was going to be this week however, there was snow last week making college closed because of the weather. And we weren't told about review week because we didn't attend last Friday plus we weren't able to submit our DVD menu work last Friday, but now, review week is going to be next week and we have got until this Friday to submit this work. I am going to come into college tomorrow to finish off everything that needs to be done for this assignment.
In review week, I will need to come in to college at 11:15 to E22 to have a 1 to 1 with the teachers and they will tell me about how I can improve on my work. We will also need to come in on Friday at 11.15 in E22 to resubmit work, EMA signing and the Christmas assignment. E21 will be available on Monday & Tuesday at 2:15 - 5:15 and Wednesday & Thursday all day. All that I need to do is get my rollover effects done and the evaluation then I can submit everything. And I will need to burn it on to a DVD disc in the correct format which would be PAL/Region 2.
Friday December 10th
Today was the deadline to submit all of our DVD menu work. I still had to finish my DVD menu but I left that until last and I did all the paperwork for the first 3 hours, printed it all out and put it all in a folder in the right order. I looked at the production schedule on Chi Online to see what order all the work needs to be in. I am also printing out this blog as a hard copy, but I’m not just going to my blog and click print pages. I copied and pasted it all into Microsoft Word to make it all look neat and it would also be in order of date, the dates of the entries I made in my blog were backwards. As in September posts being at the bottom and December posts being at the top.
When I got on to a computer that had Encore, I got my external hard drive and started to check everything was ok and ready. But before I did that, I decided to add an image of a smiley face and said “under construction” so I could use it for buttons that would not link to anything. I remember learning about this last Wednesday because Harry said “this is what professionals like to do”. When I linked the image to the menu buttons I then redirected the page to the last page it was on. I also had a problem with rollover effects, only 1 button would have a rollover effect but none of the other buttons would, however, Simon assured me it was ok because I have showed that I have learned how to use rollover effects.
The big problem I had was my project in Adobe Encore became corrupt because a file got corrupt and I couldn’t delete it. I asked Simon for help and he said I would have to start a new project in Encore and add all the images, menus, videos, layouts etc. in again and link them all up. After doing this. I updated my contingency plan and added this issue, updated and printed my blog for the last time.
